Math & Reading Scores Declined During COVID
7,000 Indiana students in 4th and 8th grade took the National Assessment of Education Progress (NAEP) test to measure their progress in both reading and math. Not surprisingly, the students’ scores reflected the loss of learning during the pandemic. Let this be a reminder that we closed our schools to slow the spread of a virus that had little effect on children. Remote learning proved to have a disastrous effect on math and reading scores. Let’s hope the state’s plan for remediation will help these students catch up to where they should be for their grade level.
